Tim Guter

Tim Guter has dedicated his career to the betterment of the NC soccer community. His passion for and service to the game is matched by few while his imprint can be seen at nearly every level; college, club, ODP, and high school.

Tim grew up in New Jersey and after a successful high school career that included a state championship in 1982 and an all-conference selection, he was recruited to play goalkeeper at Greensboro College. In his 4 years representing the Pride, Tim was selected as a captain his junior and senior seasons, was an All-Conference selection and a NSCAA All-South Region selection. Upon graduating, Tim joined the Greensboro College coaching staff as an assistant and helped guide the Pride to the 1989 Division III National Finals. From there he took the Head Women’s Soccer Coach position at Greensboro College for their inaugural season and coached them for 2 years before taking the Assistant Women’s Coach position at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1993.

Tim transitioned to the high school game in 1995 by taking a position as a Physical Education teacher and Head Men’s & Women’s Soccer Coach at New Bern High School where he continues to coach today. In 25 seasons of coaching both teams, Tim has a remarkable overall record of 677 wins against 283 losses and 85 ties. His teams have reached the Regional Finals in 4 of those seasons. His 1999 Boys Team finished nationally ranked by the United Soccer Coaches. Tim’s overall coaching record amasses 710 wins, 326 loses, and 89 ties. However, his coaching goes beyond x’s and o’s. Tim is committed to developing the student as well as the athlete. Each year, his teams engage in community service projects such as hurricane clean-up projects as well as holding the annual J-Bird Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Campaign in honor of his wife, Jessica. Tim has been well decorated for his numerous accomplishments. He was the NCSCA State Women’s Coach of the Year in 2011, a 5-time women’s NCSCA Regional Coach of the Year and a 9-time Conference Coach of the Year. On the men’s side, Tim is a 5-time NCSCA Regional Coach of the Year and a 11-time Conference Coach of the Year. He was also selected to coach in the prestigious NCCA East/West All-Star Game and the NC vs. SC Clash of the Carolinas Senior Showcase and in 2019, he was inducted in the NCSCA’s Field of Honor (hall of fame). Tim’s commitment to the high school game goes well beyond the playing field. Not only has he been a member of the NCSCA for 24 years, but he has worked tirelessly to serve the association as the Treasurer and an advocate since 1997. He is an extremely well-respected member of the NCSCA Board and often looked to as a voice of reason during meetings. A testament to this voice of reason and wisdom, Tim has presented to all high school soccer coaches at their summer clinic following the joint request of the NCHSAA as well as the NCCA.

Tim has also made a tremendous impact at the grassroots level of soccer throughout the state. A student of the game himself, Tim has earned his United Soccer Coaches Advanced Diploma, a US Soccer A License, and a US National Youth License. He has been an active club coach since 1989 serving The Greensboro Kickers, Greensboro Bucs, Greensboro Soccer Club, New Bern Area Soccer Club, Coastal United, Onslow Classic Soccer Association and most recently, the Pitt-Greenville Soccer Association. His 2002 Coastal United Club (U-19) won the NCYSA Championship and was a USYS Regional Finalist. They were also State Finalists in 2000 and 2001. In addition to his local club duties, Tim is a well-respected NC and Regional ODP coach. He spent time on the NCYSA ODP staff from 2003 to 2017, the USYS ODP Regional (East/One) Women’s Staff from 2003 to 2013 and is currently coaching with the USYS ODP Regional (South/Three) Men’s and Women’s programs and has been since 2012. In 2019, Tim earned his US Soccer Grassroots Instructor’s License and can now be found hosting and teaching US Soccer curriculum courses to soccer coaches across the state.

Tim Guter is one of the elite coaches in North Carolina at any level. His impact on the growth and development of the game reaches multiple levels and thousands of athletes and coaches. He is a gentleman and a role model and very deserving of a place in the North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame.
