Kepner played collegiate soccer at UNC for Hall of Fame coach Dr. Marvin Allen and has been an influential and dedicated leader and promoter of soccer in North Carolina ever since. He served as president of the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association for 14 years. He began coaching soccer in Chapel Hill when his two sons began playing in the early 1970s, and was the first president of the Central Carolina Youth Soccer Association. He has also served as president and treasurer of the N.C. Amateur Soccer Association, and has held positions at the Region III and national levels. He is slated to be inducted into the US Youth Soccer Region III Hall of Fame in the fall of 2005.
