Frank
Ponce grew up in Cuba, and came to Charlotte when
he was 10 years old. He excelled at football, basketball
and track at Garinger High School in Charlotte,
and when he signed a contract to teach at Myers
Park HS he learned that coaching the boys soccer
team was part of the deal. His first team made the
state final four. He coached the boys team from
1974-1980 and 1991-98, and the girls team from 1985-98.
His overall coaching record was 239-55-20. He was
named N.C. state coach of the Year for both boys
and girls soccer by the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association.
He died in 1998 and was inducted into the N.C. Soccer
Hall of Fame posthumously.
