A
native of Yorkshire, England, business brought him to Charlotte,
NC where he became active in the youth soccer association,
both as a coach and as a soccer referee. Starting in 1970,
he began to impact the Charlotte soccer community, organizing
games and teams, and helping to secure funding to build
soccer fields. He helped organize Charlotte Junior Soccer,
and in 1980 he became a USSF referee. For the next 18 years
his involvement in officiating grew, and when he retired
as an active referee in 1998, he became the State Director
of Instruction and State Director of Assessment for North
