Chapel
Hill was Sanford’s hometown when some players
from UNC introduced him to soccer. He played collegiate
soccer at Brevard and began his coaching career
as an assistant to N.C. Hall of Fame member Hank
Steinbrecher in 1981. He began an 18-year career
at High Point Wesleyan Christian Academy in 1982,
where his teams would win nine state titles, while
playing in 13 championship games. The Trojans won
six consecutive NCISAA state titles from 1990-1995.
He was named conference coach of the year 11 times,
and was the NSCAA’s National Coach of the
Year for Private/Parochial High School Coaches.
