1985 North Carolina Coach of the Year (NCSCA) 1985 Southern Regional Boys High School Coach of the Year (NSCAA) 1992 National Merit Award (jointly awarded by NISOA and NSCAA to one high school coach each year) in recognition of his outstanding contributions in the field of interscholastic soccer and his record of professionalism and sportsmanship in the game of soccer

Bob Catapano’s sentiments about his high school coaching career were expressed in a 1998 Southern Soccer Scene article: Twenty years of soccer at Sanderson brought a lot of rewarding moments. It wasn’t just the wins. It wasn’t just the state championships. It was the players, the time spent with young people, that left him with the greatest feelings of accomplishment.
