Recognized
in 1995 by one national publication as one of the 25 more
influential people in the history of American soccer. Played
collegiate soccer at UNC under Hall of Fame coach Dr. Marvin
Allen, and succeeded his mentor as the Tar Heels’
men’s head coach in 1977. Was 172-65-21 in 12 seasons
with the men. Started the women’s program in 1979
and through the 2004 season his UNC teams had won 18 national
championships and amassed a record of (579-26-17). Served
as U.S. Women’s National Coach for eight years (1986-1994)
with a 65-22-5 record, which included the first-ever FIFA
Women’s World Championships in 1991. Was inducted
into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
