All too often we
find ourselves not taking the time to remember those individuals
who paved the way for soccer as we know it today. Each year,
individuals are recognized and honored as Pioneers of the
Game during the North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame weekend.
The awards, sponsored by the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association,
are presented during the Sunday afternoon NCYSA Awards Luncheon
at the Annual General Meeting.
Honored in 2006 were
Warren Wilson College Director of Athletics/Women’s
Head Soccer Coach Stacey Enos and longtime women’s assistant
soccer coach Bill Palladino
Enos was a member of
the first U.S. Women’s National Team, starting the team’s
very-first game in 1985 against Italy. A native of Tampa,
FL, Enos also played on three NCAA Women’s National
Championship teams at UNC Chapel Hill.
Palladino, a native
of Chapel Hill, also played collegiate soccer at UNC for Hall
of Fame coach Dr. Marvin Allen. He was a teammate of UNC head
coach Anson Dorrance, and was Dorrance’s assistant coach
for the Tar Heel men for three seasons and for the past 27
years as been UNC’s assistant women’s coach, during
which time the Tar Heels have won 18 NCAA championships.
